Shut up! N0, YOU shut up!

So, um, somewhere (whistles nonchalantly) The Bug has learned the phrase "Shut up." She says it all the time. All. The. Time. She says it when I'm talking, she says it when her sister is screaming, she says it when she's screaming. Which is kind of funny in an oh crap kind of way. I don't know how to break this habit. She's been saying it for weeks now. When I say "No, you don't say that, you say 'Shhh,'" she says "Shut up." Sometimes she hits me and says "Shut up," which is lovely.

Anyone have any suggestions? Or should I just enroll her in The Little Dictator program at pre-school?

We'll have to get her together with Chicky. It'll be like Hitler and Mussolini... Wait, never mind.

i don't know, man. Gatito sighs loudly and says, "That sucks" all the time. i certainly have *no* idea where he picked that up! ;-)

If you really want my advice, I say ignore her. Totally. I've found that it gets worse at first ("did you hear me? I said shut up. Shut Up. SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP), but then it goes away. To be replaced by some other equally annoying trait...

No advice but I am very very amused trying to imagine her screaming shut up at herself during a razz.

Hope the new house is going well, because moving sucks

She could be saying worse things.... like my kids!

Oh - this is such a pain! I don't have great advice (although I do agree that ignoring it takes the pure evil pleasure out of it for the kids.)
What makes it even more challenging is that companies like Disney (who we love) uses words like "shut up", "stupid" "idiot" in their movies and shows all the time!

When the Poo uses what we call "bad words," she gets one warning and if she repeats it she gets the naughty chair for one minute on an egg timer.

It works like a charm.

Does she respond to polite vs rude terminology at all?

If not, I'd go with the "no one will want to play with you if you are telling them to shut up. it will make them feel bad. Try saying, 'shh!' instead" route.

yeah, I would probably go with explaining that saying that hurts people's feelings and then use time-outs when that doesn't work.

O has taken to saying things like, "mommy, that woman's bum is big." and "mommy, is grace's kitchen dirty?" joy.
