Here, go pee in this cup

Olivia had lab work done at last week's endo appointment and I got a note back saying that there was blood in her urine. I took her to the pediatrician today for a re-check and there was also protein and glucose in her urine. Her bg before we went in to the appointment was 83, so it wasn't from a high. I'm getting a little freaked out. Is this something that can happen normally? Should I worry? She goes back in two weeks for more testing, including blood tests, if needed. Until then, I guess I'll just chew off my fingernails.

Thinking good thoughts for you guys...

Hopefully I'm wrong but I thought blood/protein in the urine was indicative of something going on with the kidneys.

Yeah. I went running to WebMD when I got back to work and that's exactly what it told me, too. I'm trying to find a pile of sand to bury my head in until Jan. 4th when we go back to see the doctor.

Really, REALLY trying not to freak out over here.

Thinking positive thoughts for you.

Blood and/or protein in the urine can be indicative of too many things to list -- it isn't even necessarily related to kidneys; it could be something happening with the urinary tract, the bladder, etc.

Unseen infection (of the urinary tract or even 'strep' or other kinds of infection) and kidney stones (not likely at your daughter's age) could be the culprit. Hopefully, when they follow up, you'll find that it was something that's resolved itself.

In terms of glucose in the urine -- she may have spilled glucose from higher blood sugar(s) earlier. When, in the days of yore, we only tested urine -- we were warned that urine testing is NOT an accurate reflection of what's going on with blood glucose... So... I guess that doesn't tell you much of anything.

In the meantime, call out if you need a friendly ear -- or just a distraction from your poor fingernails.

Totally nothing to do with anything, but those deleted comment things? They drive me crazy. Crazy. I'm sitting here wondering what was said. Was it nice? Was it nasty? Was it a double post?

Thanks for the support. It is appreciated.

I have some sand you can borrow to bury your head :)

I think if they thought it was serious, they'd do more urgent testing.

Try not to bite too much of your nails off, although I'd be nerve wracked just because I'm a mom and moms are automatically nerve wracked.

That was me, Julia, deleting that comment. I accidentally posted twice...

Sorry.

Thanks for your comments on "High Dive," I think I'm getting addicted to this blogging thing -- and this simply wonderful community!

Again -- anytime you need a friendly ear...

Julia, protein in the urine really can mean so many things-- as Nicole points out-- urinary tract infection is just one possibility. I've also read that stress or strenuous exercise can cause the same result...

I know that none of this is really going to take away the fear, but please know that my thoughts (along with those of the rest of the OC) are with you as wait the interminable two weeks for more testing.

Sending you one helluva big hug from Wisconsin...

Sandra

p.s. you should see my nails these days...

But how is Olivia? Is she feeling fine?

I hope you get some answers soon!

Julia, I hope things are working out okay with you. Re: the blood in the urine sample, I have experienced this when I had a urinary tract infection that made its way to my kidneys. It went on for about a week and it was a nasty ordeal, but antibiotics and some sleep fixed it.

Good luck and I'm thinking of you and Olivia.

My dad has Type II diabetes and he has protein in his urine all the time. He's had lots of tests and the Dr. finally said there's nothing wrong with him or his kidneys. He just has protein in his urine.
Thinking of kidney problems with your kid is scary though. My son has diabetes and he's 3 and I worry about kidney complications with him more than anything else. I hope your daughters next set of tests come back OK.
