(And yes, they are and always will be, pocketbooks. I loathe the word purse and handbag sounds like something your great-aunt Gertrude would carry, full of used tissues that have Starlight mints stuck to them.)

Funny. My Mom always says "pocketbook", and I always thought it sounded funny. I elected to use "purse", until I came here and realised people thought I meant wallet. I recall years ago making fun of the word "handbag" with a friend for the express reason you have mentioned. HOWEVER, the worm has turned, as that is the word here, and that is what I use without hesitation. It's weird.

Interestingly enough I think the word pocketbook is outdated like the 70's. I remember my mom calling them that! We used to say pockabook. Lol.
